When auditing large architectural drawings with hundreds of layers, finding which objects reside on which layer can be daunting. Lynn Allen frequently recommended Layer Walk (LAYWALK) as one of the most powerful diagnostic tools in AutoCAD.
1. The Power of LAYWALK
Type LAYWALK to open the Layer Walk dialog. As you click on any layer in the list, AutoCAD instantly isolates and displays ONLY the objects on that layer, temporarily hiding everything else on screen without permanently modifying your layer settings.
2. Purging Unreferenced Layers Instantly
Right-clicking inside the LAYWALK dialog allows you to select Purge Unreferenced Layers, instantly cleaning out empty layers left behind by old blocks and imports.
3. Rapid Geometry Isolation with LAYISO and LAYUNISO
Use LAYISO by clicking on a wall, column, or dimension line to isolate only that layer while working. Once editing is complete, type LAYUNISO to immediately restore full drawing visibility.
